Wimbish Performance Continues

A new report by Martin Ingham studying Hastoe’s Wimbish Passivhaus Development shows that the scheme continues to deliver excellent thermal comfort, air quality and low gas bills. Updated to the end of 2017, the ongoing data collection and analysis, now having run for 6½ years, illustrates the considerable benefits of living in a Passivhaus, setting a template for all new homes. A householder, who was one of the first to move in, recently said that “their hope was that if the homes delivered half what was promised that would be great, but that actually they delivered 100%”.

Does It Cost More to Build a Passivhaus?

In a podcast interview with House Planning Help, Chris Parsons from Parsons +Whittley architects shares his experience of the costs behind Passivhaus.

Parsons + Whittley architects have always had a focus on making buildings as efficient as they can possibly be. This is one reason why we found a great synergy with Passivhaus.

In this podcast the practical reasons why Passivhaus is likely to cost more are explored (e.g. more insulation, higher quality windows etc.) and what can help keep the costs down.

Three More Passivhaus Schemes On Site

We have three new Passivhaus developments that have started on site, or about to start on site, to add to our ever-expanding portfolio.

Hatfield Heath, Essex, under Uttlesford District Council includes a total of 13 homes for rent and one for shared ownership. This Passivhaus scheme will be the second to be built within Uttlesford local authority.

Another scheme is set to be constructed in Horseheath, South Cambridgeshire. The development will consist of three units for rent to be built to a mix of Code for Sustainable Homes Level 4 of which two semi-detached houses will be Passivhaus certified.

Burnham Overy Staithe on the Norfolk coast has recently started on site. It provides five affordable housing units and an open market dwelling. Nestling in an area of outstanding natural beauty and on the edge of a conservation area, the design reflects the traditional Norfolk cottages with the use of flint, clunch, red brick and clay pantiles which all help to anchor the development in the settlement. All of the affordable units will be built to Code for Sustainable Homes level 4, and 3 of the dwellings will also achieve the Passivhaus certification.

Award Winners at South Norfolk Council

Our housing scheme at Hollow Hill Road, Ditchingham, has won this year's award in the New Building Category of the annual South Norfolk Council Design Awards. Set in a Conservation Area adjacent to Listed Tayler & Green social housing, the scheme was praised for its contemporary interpretation of 1950's design features whilst respecting the setting of the Listed Grade II buildings adjacent.

Included as a Case Study in the recently-published South Norfolk Place-Making Guide, the new development is said to 'respond positively to the site context and builds on the distinctive character of the Tayler & Green scheme including the curved terrace along with the overall scale and form. The high level of detailing to the elevations reflects the existing character and views of the existing terrace are maintained with the open green space enhancing the setting'.
